Console: Xbox (Original) Date Released: North America: November 15th 2001 Japan: February 22nd 2002 PAL: March 14th 2002 Retail Price: $199.99 USD (estimated around May 2002) Storage/Memory: 8 GB or 10 GB internal Hard Drive with 8 MB memory card Players: 4x Xbox controller ports HD Capabilities: None Previous Edition: None Look & Design..The original Xbox console was not as sleek and slim than its Xbox 360 cousins. It’s relatively large and sometimes heavy. Most common is the solid black Xbox with the bright Xbox “X” shaped logo on the top of the console. However, there are numerous other colours such as a see-through light blue and green console. The design isn’t bad and it’s rather simple for the console. Seeming as it’s usually tucked away and relatively close to the TV (due to the rather shorter AV cables); you’re not really missing any flash designs. But of course it wouldn’t have hurt to perhaps have some interesting skin designs created for the Xbox like how the Xbox 360 had interchangeable faceplates. Visuals & Graphics..Most of the games created for the Xbox had standard graphics. Not as good as modern day HD tech, but far more impressive and rendered as compared to say, Spyro the Dragon for the Playstation 1. But as the years progressed, the graphics became much, much, much better. And I mean it. You could probably see the shadows on rendered objects now instead of a black pixelated blob. Not that the pixelated blobs were bad. But you couldn’t shake the feeling that it might come alive and attack you or something. Character animation became far less… robot like. Characters were capable of fluid motions and far better facial expression on many games. A good example is the development of character facial expressions and movement in the Halo games. Other developments such as large environments were developing and were much more defined, but far off scenery still could use improvement and wasn’t too detailed. Nothing that couldn’t be solved by slapping on some fog over the scenery and Bob’s your uncle. Running & Capabilities..The Xbox was capable of running quite smoothly but would often hiccup over the smallest scratch on the disk. And due to the Xbox disks being “softer” than modern day game disks, the scratches are quite difficult to remove and cleaning scratches could cause the entire game to be non-functional. The schematics of the Xbox are pretty well balanced and the Xbox is pretty well balanced when compared to the Playstation 2 in the means of graphics, processing and other categories. It also supported the running of movies (only with an added DVD remote accessory set which was released separately. Cunning, Microsoft…) and the playing of Audio CD’s with the option of “installing” the music tracks into your system so that other games may incorporate them into their gameplay. One game that took advantage of this was Kung Fu Chaos. Value For Money..In my view, it is a good value for your buck. I’ve had a console since its release in 2002 and its still running smoothly. This was the main console used for the multiplayer games until I upgraded to an Xbox 360 Elite console early this year. So it’s had a long history and has built up a big stack of Xbox games. Most which have endless replayability so it’s never a dull moment. And since many of the games that were developed for the Xbox can be played on its successor, the Xbox 360, then you don’t have to go invest in the new HD remakes of the old classics unless you really want an added shadow on one box in the remake instead of a shadowy blob. And it doesn’t suffer from the infamous “Red Rings of Death” that comes with the Xbox 360 consoles so it does stick around for quite a while. However, support for dysfunctional consoles is harder now since the console was discontinued around 2005-2007. Then again, unless you use it as a paperweight or a door stop, there really is no reason for it to be dysfunctional.

It's definitely hard to find this console in most first-world countries though. They stopped selling quite some time already.

I tottally agree with your review, the only thing I personally think you could've added more points to is the visusal (the console) because I know the black version isn't very attractive but I personally think the green version is worth more then 7.5. But other than that great job!

The green one was and still is darn cool. Most consoles don't look that good anymore.

Very nice review, I loved the original xbox. It was original for it's times, the look was bulky, but very fascinating, and fits the name "Xbox" quite well. Most game systems were still just one shape, but the xbox had the X engraved in it, as well as the slits on the sides that gave it the amazing look. Once again, an excellent review.
