I am studying the motivations of gamers and the impact of gaming on their lives.
01) How did you first get into video gaming? 02) What was your motivation to begin gaming? 03) Why do you continue to play video games? 04) What is your motivation to play multiplayer games? 05) Do you consider gaming to be a social activity? Why or why not? 06) Do you have an active social life outside of gaming? 07) Do you feel that multiplayer gaming has altered your social abilities? If so, how? 08) Do you have any friends you do not interact with outside of video gaming? 09) Has video gaming ever hindered you in any way? 10) Do you consider yourself to be a sociable person? 11) Will/do you allow your children to become gamers? If so, to what degree? 12) Why do you play single player games? 13) Do you ever use single-player games as a substitute for social interaction? 14) Do you prefer classic single player or multiplayer gaming, or MMO’s? What makes this game design better in your opinion? 15) Have video games improved your life in any way?
01) My parents had a console when I was little. 02) I saw my parents play, they used to play this fighting game for the sega genisis where the characters were all anthropomorphic characters. 03) I think they're fun? XD I don't play as much as I used to. I like t ogo and do things that I wouldn't be able to do in the real world. 04) I don't play those, I prefer to play alone most of the time. 05) It can be, if you play online or with a friend. Otherwise no. But it can open up your world to new friends with an interest in that game. 06) Never really have, I was always the quiet shy kid that no one talked to. 07) I don't play multiplayer 08) All of them! 09) Not really, maybe only going to sleep later. 10) No XD But I am trying to be better at being a sociable person. 11) I don't like children, can't have them and don't want them. But if I was hypothetically to have one, I wouldn't stop them. 12) Because they're fun? XD 13) No. 14) Single Player. 15) Yes, I think they have made me more creative and more thoughtful about other people.

01) My parents brought me a Nintendo 64 console for my birthday. Best. Gift. Ever! 02) Back then I was a lonely only child. Games were a natural thing. That and my friends were gamers too. 03) I find some for the pure thinking aspect. Brain games or strategy. Sometimes as a stress reliever. Those are my FPS and fighting games such as Marvel vs. Capcom. 04) Multiplayer? For offline, it's purely because I claim all the titles off of my friends and they want the titles off me so I have to defend them. For online, it's more of me stacking up myself at how well I actually am on an international scale. 05) It is quite a social activity. Most of my friends game. Naturally. It's also a good way to meet gamers who live in other countries. Ever a social butterfly... 06) Of course. I attend University/College and attend any invited parties/formal events. 07) Well, picked up on more social interactions between different ages of gamers. From the mic screams of ragequitting adolescents to the annoyed gruff of a veteran. 08) Just those who are overseas. Which is many. But some I do often chat to on some daily basis via Skype. 09) Not that I recall. It has been the topic of my procrastination many times, however. 10) Maybe? 11) I would of course teach them the ways of gaming. However not to the degree where all they ever know off by hearts are cheat codes to Warcraft III. 12) I actually enjoy single player more than multiplayer. I guess its the feeling of having my own time where I can just relax and unwind. And unload my entire needler clip into the gut of an unfortunate brute. 13) Well, no. As much as I do enjoy making smart arsed remarks to an NPC who cannot act outside their fixed behaviours, I would rather have a real person to interact with. Someone who has a good sense of humour is probably preferred. 14) Classic single player. MMO's tend to have either annoying users message you or have them spam you or even surprise you if it happens to be a FPSMMO. 15) Well, they've allowed me to become a reviewer on an awesome forum so that is a perk. It's also a common interest that my girlfriend shares with me and for that I am very glad.

Thank you all for your excellent responses, and even for the one-word answers and comedic refusals (which were far more prevalent in the PC forums). It has been fascinating reading your replies and comparing them to those posted on the Bioware, N2Sider, Steam, AnandTech, and other forums, as well as those gathered in person at our local Game Stop, and I genuinely appreciate the support you've all given this project. Unfortunately, we are not members of any government agency or major research group. We are high school students (DHHS is the abbreviation of our school's name) working on a paper and presentation for our final and helping our teacher write his next book, which will be about social networking sites and video games' impact on people's social lives. In the past he's written college required readings and books on the impacts of television and marketing on children's development, both positively and negatively. I will leave this thread up even though we won't be recording any more replies, and later post a link to a website where I'll post our paper, in case anyone is interested. I hope you guys have learned as much about your fellow gamers as I have, and I would like to express my gratitude for your being so willing to help us without any knowledge of our identities or intentions.

Well, it's good to know that I've helped with something. Looking forward to when you will post up a link so I can read what other results you've gathered.
